Run by the Los Angeles Recreation and Parks department, Angels Gate Cultural Center is a multi-faceted organization that offers beginning printmaking classes for only $18 an hour. Angels Gate Cultural Center also showcases LA-based artists throughout the year.

ART CENTER COLLEGE OF DESIGN

Art Center’s printmaking facilities enable students to explore intaglio, screen printing, stone and plate lithography, and various photographic printmaking techniques. The 3,000 square-foot printmaking studio houses a press room, etching room and darkroom, as well as storage and office space. Art Center also offers public programs for anyone 18 and up in letterpress printmaking (as well as a 200 other fields) without having to sign on as a full-time student. The costs vary from class to class but generally fall under the $300 to $400 price range.

BLUE ROOSTER ART

Blue Rooster is run by artists for artists. Here in Los Angeles the shop has gained a reputation for excellent service, good selection, and great prices. They offer $75 printmaking classes each week, unless you purchase $200 of printmaking supplies, in which case the classes are free.

ELLENS

Ellens works closely with customers and, while they do not open their shop to classes, they do open their studios to customers planning to create work in bulk. Prices vary from project to project but are generally medium price.

GEMINI G.E.L. Graphic Edition

Founded in 1966, Gemini G.E.L. is an artists’ workshop and publisher of limited edition prints and sculptures. At Gemini, the artists do all of the drawing or carving directly onto the printing elements. The edition is hand-printed by Gemini‘s master printers, and each print is signed and numbered by the artist as well as embossed with the Gemini ‘chop’. Not for the inexperienced or uncommitted. Inquire about prices as they vary.

Advice from returning customers: ask for Thomas, the store’s owner and printmaking instructor. His patience and passion for printmaking make the fairly steep prices (80 bucks an hour) entirely worth it.

IRVINE FINE ARTS CENTER

Irvine

Letterpress, intaglio, monoprint/type, relief and experimental processes are just a few printmaking forms the Irvine Fine Arts Center offers to aspiring artists. They offer master classes as well as dry-point, monoprint and paper lithograph courses in April and May of this year. To take classes, you must sign up to become a member and pay for classes in bulk. Prices range from $125 to $150.

It’s best to call or visit Self-Help to find out when they’re putting on a workshop. Usually classes are five days of every month with inexpensive price tags – $10 for adults. Free for ages 12-18 – and experienced, hands-on professionals.
